Australian retailers to start accepting eCommerce payments this July, with an aim to take their business from a niche to a mainstream one.
Auckland-based retail retailer Shopify, which also has a presence in the UK, announced today that it will open a new eCommerce site in the city of Melbourne in July, and will offer the same services and products as its own online store, with its own checkout process.
“We’ve been working on this for about two years now, but it was a bit of a surprise to hear that we were going to open up a retail store,” Shopify CEO Michael Meegan said in a press release.
“The store is going to be a real opportunity for our existing customers to go online and make purchases, and to have our own experience, so that they can compare and contrast products and services with others in their industry.”
The announcement comes just days after Australian retailer Aussie Home, which has a number of Australian stores and has previously opened stores in London and Hong Kong, also announced plans to launch a similar online store in Melbourne, and has since moved its headquarters from the UK to Australia.
“While we have been working hard to make the transition to a store-based approach for a while, it has been a bit disappointing to see that we have not been able to bring this store into Australia in time,” Meeggan said.
“But the team is committed to making the transition as smooth as possible, and we look forward to the opening of our first store in September.”
In addition to the Melbourne store, Shopify will open stores in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart, with plans to open more stores in Sydney in 2018 and Melbourne in 2020.
“Our aim is to open our first Melbourne store by the end of the year,” MEEggan added.
The move comes after the launch of a second Sydney store last year, with the retailer expecting to open three stores in the country by the time it closes its doors.
“As we have moved from a small, niche store into a major store, we have seen significant growth,” Meesgan said, noting that his company has now sold more than 100,000 items.
“So we have made a commitment to continue to grow our business, to deliver better customer service, and provide the best products and service to our customers.”
Shopify has also partnered with Australian retailers and manufacturers, with Meegans own Australian brand being the focus of the company’s new store.
“In addition, we will be opening a few new stores in Australia over the coming year, and in the future we hope to open stores across Australia and the world,” he said.
Shopify is not the only Australian company to have taken a step towards opening a store in Australia, with Australian ecommerce giant Myntra also planning to open a store, and a number others are working on their own eCommerce stores.
